Essentials of Requirements Engineering

  • Introduction and Overview:
    • Defining Requirements Engineering (RE) and Business Analysis (BA).
    • The RE Process Model: covering Elicitation, Elaboration, Specification, and Validation.
    • Exploring the "V-Model" and Agile viewpoints within RE.
  • Core Principles:
    • Stakeholder Analysis: identifying and categorizing stakeholders.
    • Requirement Quality: understanding characteristics such as Correct, Complete, Consistent, and Unambiguous.
    • The cost of change curve and why early requirements are critical.
  • Lab 1: Exercise on stakeholder mapping and assessing requirement quality.

Requirements Elicitation and Elaboration

  • Methods for Elaborating Requirements:
    • Elicitation Techniques: In-depth look at interviews, workshops (Joint Application Design), observation, and prototyping.
    • Domain Analysis: recognizing domain concepts and constructing domain models.
    • Use Cases: Defining Actors, system boundaries, and the main success scenario (Use Case specification).
    • Scenarios: Formulating specific use scenarios and acceptance criteria.
  • Lab 2: Writing Use Case descriptions and User Stories based on a given scenario.

Requirements Specification & Documentation

  • Deliverables and Documentation Standards:
    • The Requirements Specification: Structure and content of an SRS (Software Requirements Specification).
    • Notations: Introduction to standard modeling notations: UML (Use Case Diagrams, Activity Diagrams) and BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation).
    • Mockups and Prototypes: Utilizing wireframes and prototypes to confirm requirements with stakeholders.
  • Lab 3: Modeling a business process with BPMN and a system interaction using UML.

Requirements Management and Process Integration

  • Managing Requirements:
    • Traceability: Forward and backward traceability matrices.
    • Change Management: Managing requirements change requests (RFC) and version control.
    • Configuration Management: Managing requirements artifacts as deliverables.
  • Process and Operational Structure:
