Training Skills

  • Delivery of a pre-prepared training session on a work-related subject of the delegate’s choice.

N.B. The duration of each delegate’s training session will depend on the overall course length and the number of participants. A group of eight is ideal.

  • Comprehensive one-to-one and group feedback

Preparing a Training Session

  • Key questions for the trainer to consider in advance:
    • Why am I the right person for this?
    • Logistics regarding what, where, when, how, and how long?
    • Understanding how the answers to these questions influence the structure of the training session
  • Structuring the content:
    • Research – gaining deep subject matter knowledge
    • Organising the content logically
    • Creating and employing complementary visual aids

Preparing the Trainer

  • The three fundamental communication tools for a trainer:
    • Verbal – choice of words, avoiding slang and jargon
    • Vocal – tone and sound, avoiding distracting verbal tics and unnecessary punctuation
    • Visual – the presenter’s appearance: attire, mannerisms, and presence
  • Rehearsing the training session – and obtaining honest feedback from a trustworthy source
  • Managing nerves effectively

Preparing the Environment

  • Room layouts – and how they convey underlying messages to participants
  • Leveraging the room to enhance the training experience
  • …and ensuring the room is tidied after the course

Evaluation

  • The importance of evaluation
  • Processes for obtaining and utilising participant feedback

Training Skills – revisited

  • Delivery of another training session (after a suitable preparation period).

N.B. This may be the same presentation as in Module 1, but revised based on detailed feedback.
