Course Outline
Day 1: Cloud Foundations and Core Services
Module I: Cloud Architecture Fundamentals
- Core principles of cloud architecture and non-functional requirements, focusing on availability, scalability, security, and performance
- Cloud adoption strategies and associated trade-offs, including IaaS, PaaS, SaaS models, and the shared responsibility model
- Key components of Azure architecture: Regions, Resource Groups, and individual Resources
- Designing mission-critical architectures with a focus on disaster recovery targets (RTO and RPO)
Module II: Essential Cloud Services
- Storage and data management basics, specifically using Azure Table Storage and Azure Cosmos DB
- Compute and containerization platforms: Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) and Azure Container Registry (ACR)
- Relational data management and messaging: Azure SQL Database and Azure Service Bus
- Practical exercises for each service, covering configuration, deployment, and evaluation against availability, performance, security, and cost criteria
- Implementing Infrastructure as Code with Bicep to ensure reproducible and consistent environments
Day 2: Architecture Leadership and Clean Architecture
Module III: The Role of the Architect
- Defining software architecture and understanding different architectural viewpoints
- The scope of responsibilities, key roles, and decision-making ownership for software architects
- Crafting architectural specifications and communicating effectively with both technical teams and business stakeholders
- Mapping a practical career path to becoming a highly effective software architect
Module IV: Managing Dependencies in Monolithic Systems
- Principles of Clean Architecture, including separation of concerns, dependency direction, and strategies for long-term maintainability
- Evaluating the most suitable cloud services for monolithic modernization, analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of each choice
- Hands-on workshop: Designing, building, and deploying a Clean Architecture-based solution on Azure using .NET
Day 3: Domain-Driven and Distributed Architectures
Module V: DDD, CQRS, and Event Sourcing
- Foundations of Domain-Driven Design (DDD), covering domain boundaries, establishing a ubiquitous language, and model-driven design
- Concepts of CQRS and Event Sourcing, and their application to complex, evolving business domains
- Common architectural patterns found in DDD-based cloud solutions
- Hands-on workshop: Applying Event Sourcing as a requirements-driven design technique, translating business requirements into events, aggregates, and event flows
Module VI: Microservices Architecture
- Core principles of microservices architecture and the trade-offs inherent in distributed systems
- Strategic selection of cloud services for microservices-based solutions, weighing the benefits and limitations
- Synchronous and asynchronous communication patterns in microservices, including reliability mechanisms such as circuit breakers and resilience strategies
- Ensuring testability in microservices and CI/CD pipelines: contract testing, defining integration test boundaries, automated quality gates, and building deployment confidence
- Hands-on workshop: Building and deploying a microservices solution on Azure using .NET
Requirements
- Proficiency in an advanced programming language, such as C# or Java
- Basic understanding of the architectural styles covered in the course
- Foundational knowledge of cloud computing services
- A minimum of 5 years of professional software engineering experience
