Course Outline

The Design Thinking Mindset & Innovation Landscape

  • The 5 Stages: Deep dive into Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test.
  • Innovation Theory: Understanding the relationship between DT, disruptive innovation, and entrepreneurship.
  • The Problem Space: Learning to look for patterns, problem definitions, and why "finding the right problem" matters more than the solution.
  • Group Exercise: "Why" vs. "How" — Identifying a real-world complex problem to solve throughout the day.

Empathy, User Research & Problem Definition

  • Empathy Mapping: Techniques to understand the user’s pain points, needs, and motivations.
  • Stakeholder Mapping: Identifying who is affected and how to engage them.
  • The Persona: Creating archetypes of the target audience.
  • Defining the Problem: Writing effective Problem Statements (Point-of-View statements) and "How Might We" (HMW) questions to frame the challenge.
  • Workshop: Drafting personas and problem statements for the group's chosen case study.

Ideation & Divergent Thinking

  • Generating Ideas: Techniques to break creative blocks (SCAMPER, Brainstorming rules, Worst Possible Idea).
  • Idea Selection: Methods for filtering and prioritizing ideas (Dot voting, Impact/Effort Matrix).
  • Agile Estimation: introducing basic techniques to estimate the viability of ideas.
  • Group Exercise: Rapid ideation sprint to generate solutions for the defined problem.

Prototyping & The Art of Failing Fast

  • Prototyping: Principles of rapid prototyping (Paper, cardboard, storyboarding, role-play).
  • Testing: How to formulate a test plan and get meaningful feedback.
  • Iterative Approach: The cycle of "Build-Measure-Learn" — embracing failure as a learning tool.
  • Tools: Introduction to Customer Journey Maps and Service Blueprints to visualize the solution.
  • Workshop: Creating low-fidelity prototypes of the top solutions.

Testing, Evaluation & Refinement

  • Running the Test: How to present prototypes and ask the right questions.
  • Feedback Loops: Distinguishing between constructive feedback and preferences.
  • Model Drift: Recognizing when the solution deviates from the user's core needs.
  • Group Exercise: Peer testing of prototypes and refining the solution based on feedback.

Scaling Impact & Leadership Readiness

  • Business Model Innovation: Aligning the solution with the Business Model Canvas.
  • Critical Thinking & Leadership: Integrating the DT mindset into daily work and decision-making.
  • Cultural Implementation: Overcoming resistance to change and fostering a culture of psychological safety.
